A writer is always pleased to see reviews of his books, even bad ones, as they at least suggest that someone is reading his work. But when you come across a review that actually understands what you are trying to do - well, one can be practically overjoyed. Here is an excellent review of my book The Quest for Hermes Trismegistus that I recently came across trawling through the net.
Hi Gary,
Glad you liked my book review and thanks for the link! The review originally appeared in De Numine, the newsletter of the Alister Hardy Society for the Study of Spiritual Experience.
Cheers!
Mike
Many thanks for getting in touch. Your review was one of the few that actually spoke about the ideas in the book. Thank you for that. Best, Gary
Dear Gary, just finished reading Hermes Trismegistos, great book, thank you!
From my own persepctive I want to mention the following: the figure of Hermes Trismegistos symbolises the Yang energy in any individual, man or woman, that acts in the world by means of the ego personality. He or she has becomes Hermes when he has succesfully undertaken the trip within his unconscious parts of self in order to reveal to himself the Truth about this world and his/her presence therein.
Tris megistos refers to the 3d world of mankind, within and without, of physical, emotional and mental dimensions. All three have fallen into duality. The 4th that is hidden within and that holds unity, is revealed wehn the Hermes has done the job in the underworld and is ready to make new choices based upon a new unity consciousness. “The 3/4 of the wisdom of the world” (tabula smaragdina) refers to the number 9 as does the word “makara” that Mme Blavatsky also mentions. ( corresponds with the letter theta that refers to all words divine in Greek.
The word “Makara”has a deep connotation and is known in various cultures: Greek, Ethiopian, Ind,ian, New Zealand (Maori), Arabia, Polynesia, Hawaii.
It is my personal conviction that it refers to the planet Mercurius, that one has to awaken in him/herself when the inner work is done. The Messenger of God is to be awakened by the human being himself within him/herself. There is a symbol for this knowledge ant it is also found in cultures that are remote in time and space. The figure of Hermes Trismegistos is referring to an energetic state of being of psecifically the Yang energies that have calmed down and integrated into the heart. It is mankind’s universal legacy and task at the same time. The Kali Yuga is marked by the forgetting of Hermes’s heritage and humanities tragic mistake to take energies litterally and personally. But we are awakening…..
