My interview with Nikita Petrov about Dark Star Rising for MeaningofLife TV is now up on You Tube. It seems to have generated a lot of discussion. But you can see for yourself here.
And an article I wrote about Jordan Peterson during the height of Petersonmania has also been put online by the good people at New Dawn magazine. Here it is.
And for those in the London area, I’m at Watkins Bookshop tonight, spelling out what these dark stars mean in our dim time.
That’s enough for a late summer post.
Jordan Peterson is Deepak Chopra for the Right.
Ah. And where does that leave Oprah Winfrey?
Less cozy with the Pepe the crowd?
Read the Jordan Peterson piece and appreciated it greatly. Congratulations and thank you for such a thorough, objective and articulate article.
My pleasure and I am glad you enjoyed it.
Former White House staffer Omarosa Manigault Newman in her new book Unhinged: An Insider Account of Trump’s White House describes the world around the President as a cult in which he creates his own reality. She told the The New York Times on Sunday: “I think it’s incredibly important in Trump world that you protect yourself, because everyone constructs their own reality” and “People around him try to reinforce that manufactured reality”. Strange Days at the Whitehouse.
Many thanks for this Nigel. Can someone tell the New York Times that I said it first?
A very interesting collection of articles and opinions, thank you. It occurs to me you may be writing more deeply than you realise.
Dark Star Rising is fantastic! Y’know, a while back I, regretfully, engaged with an alt-right / national-socialist type on a metaphysics forum. He outright stated that he and his fellow travellers were consciously using the internet, and memes specifically, to perform grand magical acts to further their agenda.
These day’s I’m frequently reminded of one of Leonard Cohen’s later lyrics:
————————————-
Things are going to slide (slide) in all directions
Won’t be nothing (won’t be)
Nothing you can measure anymore
The blizzard, the blizzard of the world
Has crossed the threshold
And it has overturned
The order of the soul
………………………………………
Yikes!
Anyway, thanks for the great writing…. even if I largely disagree with you on Peterson (you literal NAZI!!).
Peace.
I’m glad you like the book and thanks for the anecdote about alt-right magic. You’re about the fourth person who has contacted me telling a similar story. And I’m happy you disagree with me about JBP. To be honest, I haven’t kept up with him since writing the article - which I did some months ago - so I’m not really au fait with his current controversies. Cheers!
I see, so you must have deleted my comments.
I posted them a second time, because I had a feeling that they didn’t go through the first time.
I thought you Americans embrace your freedom of speech, no?
Or maybe it doesn’t apply to me, because I’m an Australian.
And yes, I know, this website is your “private property.”
I read that others here, make obsequious and sycophantic comments about your writing, and then go on to label you a literal Nazi, but maybe it was in jest.
Perhaps that’s what I should have done, made some grovelling comment, and then made my criticisms…
“…and thanks for the anecdote about alt-right magic.”
Indeed.
And by the way, Jordan Peterson is appearing on Sky News here Sunday night our time, and Sky News is the equivalent to Fox News in the United States.
He’s so desperately avoiding those far right media outlets.
That’s my attempt at sarcasm, because I know it is the Americans default setting, when it comes to humour.
Dear Mr. Harris. I did not delete your comments. I simply did not approve of them, both in the technical sense of not allowing them to be posted on my site, but also in the more general sense of disagreeing both with their content and their tone. I am only approving of this one here because I can tell from your persistence that this is an important issue for you. I do think that if you wish to share your opinion, critical or otherwise, with the author of an article you disagree with, you may have a better chance of having him participate in the discussion if you don’t start your remarks with insulting and inaccurate statements. Insults I can let pass - I’ve been insulted by experts and am often the target of them today. But inaccuracies get my dander up. I did not grovel in my article, nor do I engage in that pastime anywhere else. But it seems a word for which you have a particular fondness. If you don’t like my article, that’s fine. You’re not the only one. But to make a personal attack on me because of it is rather base. I was asked by New Dawn to write the article, and I did. It is a good article, one of my best actually, and I stand by it top to bottom. You’re entitled to your opinion about it, but you are not entitled to use my web space to advertise your low opinion of me and my work.
Whoa, I hoped no one would take my NAZI comment seriously. And obsequious, sycophantic grovelling was not something I was going for.
Hi Gary,
I heard you on 94.1 yesterday and really enjoyed it. I’m curious about the history of things as you are so I appreciate your efforts.
I read the Peterson article and had to let out a big disappointed sigh though: “Which is: don’t blame anyone else – the ‘system’, your parents, your wife, your boss, the ‘patriarchy’ – for your failings.”
This continues to purport the ideology that the systems which we inhabit are not a problem. But so many are and not the least of which is gross income inequality coupled with the idea that some human groups are inherently better than others. This is the big problem with the idea. It’s chicken and egg, not just chicken and then egg.
Listening to you yesterday made me think that you understand this point, but after reading the Peterson article it’s unclear to me if you do. And if you don’t, then it would likely bias all your other writings. That would be unfortunate.
I’m curious why you wouldn’t call Peterson out for the just chicken ideology and the idea there is a solid human nature outside of history (and all the systems and processes that took pace).
Thank you for time and energy,
Larsena
Many thanks for your comment. I’m sorry you didn’t like my article, but you can’t please everyone. I don’t believe I am promoting any ideology whatsoever; if anything, I am an anti-ideologue. Of course there are problems and inequalities in life. No society is perfect. But I think it is more important for people to deal with their own inadequacies before they blame someone else for them. I am not saying everyone does that but some people do. In fact, I know quite a few. I guess you will have to see for yourself if “all my other writings” are biased. When you’ve read them, let me know. All the best, Gary
